For our customers in software development, we offer an extension for the Visual Studio IDE in addition to our Visual Studio Code extension. It is published on the Visual Studio Marketplace.
With the extension, you can check documents open in Visual Studio for correct terminology right inside the IDE. You can also search your termbases without leaving Visual Studio.
Note: This article covers the extension for Visual Studio (Windows). There is a separate extension for Visual Studio Code, see Visual Studio Code extension.
Requirements
- Visual Studio 2022 or Visual Studio 2026 (Community, Professional or Enterprise) on Windows
- Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime. It is already installed on current versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11. If it is missing, the Lexeri window shows a download link.
- A Lexeri account with access to at least one termbase
The extension checks the text of the active editor. It therefore works with any text-based file you open in Visual Studio, e.g. RESX, JSON, XAML, XML, HTML or source code containing UI texts.
Installation
Install the extension from Visual Studio's extension manager:
- In the menu, choose Extensions > Manage Extensions.
- Search for "Lexeri" and click Install.
- Close Visual Studio so the installation can complete, then restart it.
Alternatively, you can find the extension directly on the Marketplace: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=Lexeri.LexeriVisualStudio. There you can also download the VSIX file and install it by double-clicking it, e.g. on machines without direct Marketplace access.
With the default settings, Visual Studio installs updates automatically on the next restart. To uninstall the extension, go to Extensions > Manage Extensions > Installed.
Opening the Lexeri window and signing in
- Open the Lexeri window via View > Other Windows > Lexeri. Like any tool window in Visual Studio, you can dock it wherever you like.
- Sign in with your Lexeri account.
- Confirm the sign-in in the browser window that opens.
You stay signed in after restarting Visual Studio. The Lexeri window follows Visual Studio's display language: German, English, French or Spanish. For other languages, it appears in English.
Usage
The extension works like our other plugins and add-ins. In the start view, select a termbase at the top and then use one of the following features.
Term search
Enter a word in the search field to search the selected termbase. You can expand each result to see the term's details.
Term check
- In the editor, click into the document you want to check.
- In the Lexeri window, click Check document, select the termbase and language, and start the check.
- The terms found are shown as a list. Expand a match to see more information.
The check always uses the last active document in the editor. Unlike the VS Code extension, you do not need to save it first: the extension reads the current text directly from the editor.
You can work in the document directly from the list of matches:
- Show occurrence: Under Occurrences you find every sentence containing the term. The eye icon ("Show the sentence preview") highlights the passage in the editor and scrolls to it.
- Suggested improvements: For forbidden terms, the star icon opens a corrected suggestion for the sentence. Accept suggestion replaces the sentence directly in the document. Press Ctrl+Z to undo this in a single step. This feature requires the AI package.
- Open term entry: The info icon opens the full term entry in Lexeri.
- Ignore hits: Use the menu of an occurrence to hide a match for this sentence in the future.
If you switch to another document after the check, the extension marks the results as outdated. Showing occurrences and accepting suggestions are then disabled so that no change ends up in the wrong document. Click Check again to start a new check.
Extract terms
If you are allowed to edit the selected termbase, the start view also shows Start term extraction. Use it to check the active document for candidates for new terms.
FAQ
I can't find the extension under "Other Windows". Restart Visual Studio completely after the installation. Check under Extensions > Manage Extensions > Installed whether Lexeri is listed and enabled.
The Lexeri window stays empty or shows a notice about the WebView2 Runtime. Install the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime using the link in the window and restart Visual Studio. The extension also loads its interface from plugins.lexeri.com. Please make sure this address is reachable on your network.
The term check checks the wrong document. The check uses the last active editor window. Click once into the document you want before starting the check.
Does the extension support Visual Studio 2019 or Visual Studio for Mac? No. The extension runs on Windows with Visual Studio 2022 and 2026.
